The shield is formidable in both speed and strength — capable of withstanding considerably strong attacks and blocking fast projectiles. Comparatively-speaking, the ash shield is so fast that even Amaterasu cannot breach it. The sand shield is so strong that even the extreme force of a power Nintaijutsu technique cannot crush through it without extreme effort. The Shield of Ash is a descendant of Shield of Sand and the Armour of Sand which together form what is known as Garaa's "Absolute Defence" (絶対防御, Zettai Bōgyo).
Natsu can completely surround himself in the shield to further increase his defensive capabilities. In addition to being extremely dense, this Ash-like vortex that surrounds the half-sphere buffets everyone who would get close. The ash is easily manipulated using chakra focused into in order to form spikes from its surface to spear any would-be attacker. This formation can be used in mid-air.
