The moon (月, tsuki) is a planetary body orbiting the world. The moon was created by the first jinchūriki, the Sage of the Six Paths, through his and his brother's fūinjutsu. The Sage sealed the physical remains of the Ten-Tails after he used his Creation of All Things ability to divide its chakra into the nine tailed beasts. Hamura later took leadership of the Ōtsutsuki clan and decided to live on the moon in order to guard the Demonic Statue, though not before receiving instructions from his brother to wait for a full millennium and observe mankind.

Madara Uchiha, after awakening the Rinnegan, released the seal placed on the empty vessel of the Ten-Tails and summoned it back to earth. Madara's ultimate plan, that was later adopted by Obito Uchiha, the Eye of the Moon Plan, involved reviving the Ten-Tails through joining the other tailed beasts, becoming its jinchūriki, and then projecting his eyes onto the moon in order to cast his "Infinite Tsukuyomi": a perpetual, world-scale genjutsu cast on every living being on the planet. This would allow both Madara and Obito to control and unite them to create a world with neither war nor hatred, making themselves the rulers of the world but at the cost of eliminating free will from humanity.[3]

Later, after the revival and subsequent battle with Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha worked together to create a very similar satellite in her core dimension in order to re-seal her.

In The Last: Naruto the Movie, Toneri Ōtsutsuki dislodges the moon from orbit to collide it into the earth to punish humanity for abusing chakra. During his final battle with Naruto Uzumaki, the moon was nearly destroyed from their clashes and Toneri even cut the satellite in half. But later, thanks to Naruto's efforts, the moon's orbit was later fixed and its shape later restored again to its original form.

Known Access to the Moon[]

In The Last: Naruto the Movie, there was only one way to access the moon. It was via a portal located inside an underground spring which seems to be covered with snow. The spring is unique because its water doesn't make anything which falls down to the spring wet. There is a different dimension in the portal which "bridged" the earth and the moon. The portal is guarded by a giant crab which fills the portal with floating orbs, with some of them made from earthly material and many of them made from a quartz-like material that reflects the memories of anyone that passed through them and will trap them in their own memories if accidentally plunged into them. The dimension, somehow, collapsed near the end of the movie, and the "bridge" between the two worlds was severed.

Environment[]

In The Last: Naruto the Movie, the moon itself from outside seems to have a harsh, barren, and lifeless environment with a landscape consisting of many craters, canyons, and mountains. However, beneath the surface there is a small city-sized cavern, relative to the size of the moon, that has a vast body of water, the ocean's surface is slightly curved inwards, there are floating terrains, and a lush forest. One of the terrains holds the ancient ruins of the Ōtsutsuki's ninja village. However, unlike Earth, everything in here is floating away and reversed in position (the sky below and anything else above). Every living thing in the Moon's interior is supported by an artificial sun where the Ōtsutsuki's Tenseigan is stored. Inside the moon's interior there are many trees growing as well as insects (such as fireflies) and spiders. There is also evidence that cattle and agricultural crops are also there; in a scene, Toneri and Hinata dined on various foods, suggesting the moon dwellers were capable of sustaining themselves. A large (now ruined) ancient city, where the Ōtsutsuki lived in the past, is also located here. There is a broken Hamura's statue and some ancient writings on the wall about Ōtsutsuki clan and Tenseigan, near its symbol, on the floor there is a secret entrance which opens and gives access to stairway leading to the basement where the cemetery of main family of Ōtsutsuki clan is located. The artificial sun itself is guarded by a countless puppet armament. The only known access is via a special hand seal, which creates a circular opening. Inside the artificial sun there is the artificial sun's core, which consisted of a planet (where the Ōtsutsuki's Tenseigan is stored) is enclosed by a crescent-shaped planetary remnant formation resembling Ōtsutsuki's emblem, there is Toneri's castle atop. The core is also surrounded by numerous floating islands, with each island having a mountain, one of which houses Hamura's Shrine. On the temple of Hamura the Statue of the Ōtsutsuki Clan resideds. When the Energy Vessel was destroyed by Naruto and Hinata via their combined effort, the moon's movement was stopped temporarily. It also caused the artificial sun to disintegrate, causing darkness to engulf the moon's interior. It also disabled the entirety of the puppet armament.

SL Version[]

On SL, the environment of the moon’s interior shares similarities to the one presented to us in Naruto: The Last, but overall has many key differences. The one most glaring difference is the size, presenting as much larger than originally shown in the anime. Now, the lands that encompass the Moon’s interior seem to expand over the size of multiple continents. Still retaining massive floating structures and powered by the Tenseigan altar, the interior of the moon now also features massive expanding forests, multiple abandoned civilizations containing secrets of the Otsutsuki and exotic breeds of plants and animals found only within these strange microbiomes. As of this time it is unclear how exactly both the flora and fauna alike survived the decades, possibly centuries, of pitch-black lethal cold after the altar's original destruction. Considering their relatively speedy resurgence after the energy vessels revival however, without an interfering hand from either of the places two current guardians, the current most likely theory is remaining ambient energies coupled with the species' own innate resilience allowed them to withstand the conditions akin to being cryogenically frozen.

In expeditions helmed by Rusaku during his hiatus from the lands below, the Moon’s interior was beginning to be explored in order to map out exactly what could be done with all the untapped resources. This eventually led Rusaku to the conclusion that these territories were far more dangerous than previously expected.

Geography:[]

The Moon’s interior landscape is constantly shifting and changing, likely due to the presence of artificial gravity. It makes settlements very scarce and only few outposts of former civilizations are present. The space consists of several continent sized land masses that contain lush green forests, expansive flowing bodies of water, and looming snow covered mountaintops. Another geographical feature to be noted is the large, floating polyhedron-shaped stones that litter the landscape. These ancient, rune-carved monoliths are strewn across the Moon; a glaring reminder at the long lost civilization that once inhabited this space. Up to ten miles long, some of these stones drift in the sky; others are buried in the ground, some whole, some broken. The true nature of these stones has yet to be discovered.

Trap-riddled ruins can be found on every continent. Mysterious glyphs hint at truths long forgotten. Unspeakable monsters lurk in the quiet of these hidden monuments of a forgotten past. The ruins still emanate power that budding new explorers will undergo great peril to reap the rewards of.

The final notable feature of the Moon’s interior landscape is that in addition to the strange monoliths that dot the landscape, there are several gravity wells that have manifested randomly in this space, causing massive chunks of land to be ripped into the sky, never to come back down.

The outside of the lunar sphere is much as one might expect viewing it down from earth; a barren rocky wasteland, caked in ever present grey dust shaved off the stone by solar winds and occasional meteor impact. Though it has been appearing peculiarly somewhat more..."alive" in current times, in a manner an unknowing observer can not really put a finger on, there hasn't been any perceivable change in years until recently. Quite formidable in person yet not so much so it'd be perceivable without a telescope, peppered through the landscape in mathematically precise intervals now lay a collage of sizable black rods of rinnegan material. While useless on their own outside of looking imposing sticking up from the ground as such, they ultimately act as a safeguard due to projecting a field outward (linked to the power of the altar) that nullifies any and all space-time techniques, bar those who bear a specifically made tag that creates a tiny safe pocket. Perhaps a needless concern an earth-dweller might argue, but those more knowledgeable would likely agree tis' a prudent precaution against other unmentionable threats.

Life:[]

Prowling-Felidar

During the early stages of research, it was discovered that many different species of life had somehow found their way to this place. It’s speculated that this is the result of multiple different circumstances. Perhaps the Otsutsuki had brought animals or crops up when they transitioned here. Or maybe they were creatures trapped during the Moon’s creation, adapting to the new environment over time. Whatever the case may be, over the generations the animals and plants have changed dramatically. Research is still being done as to how many different kinds of animals live here, but it has been confirmed that beasts of all shapes and sizes have made this place their home. Creatures rivaling and even exceeding the size of the largest recorded summoning beasts have been spotted roaming the mountainsides or hiding themselves within the dense forests. With unknowable horrors that dwell at the bottoms of the expansive underwater vistas.

Meanwhile plantlife has also seemed to follow a different evolutionary timeline. The artificial sunlight and oxygen seems to have had some kind of effect on the plant life here, resulting in strange and unique mutations unlike anything we’ve seen before. So much so that reports have implied the existence of flesh eating plants that display borderline sentience. This is but one of many strange reports made in these lands.

Locations:[]

While a majority of the landscape is unexplored currently, with many more places to find, there are a few notable locations that exist currently:

Newcaslte

Otsutsuki Manor: This location is the primary home of Rusaku Otsutsuki. A massive floating castle with clear gothic inspired architecture and many stained glass windows lining it’s walls. The interior of the Manor is simple and clean, tended by the masses of Otsutsuki puppets at his disposal. Several of the rooms have been converted into useful places for Rusaku to work. This includes a machine shop where he works on puppets and drones to help him explore the interior. A research facility where he can study the different life forms that he has discovered and finally a room especially designed to withstand his maximum output for training. This place is located orbiting around the artificial sun, powered by the Tenseigan Altar, though as of late Rusaku has also been researching alternatives to make it self-sufficient.

Otsutsuki Castle: While one might think the artificial sun a blazing sphere deathly to touch, it is in truth as hollow as the moon itself it lies within, its exterior a compressed field that radiates its solar power outward that requires specialized methods to bypass. Within the sun at its center floats a considerably large rock formation, shaped somewhat a mixture between the otsutsuki clan symbol and a crescent moon, with its very top housing the impressive if somewhat menacing structure the aforementioned manor is stylized after. Despite its status as the former seat of power for the now perished moon dwellers it lies largely empty nowadays, but for the puppet caretakers roaming its hallways, though it retains its importance even to the current meager lunar inhabitants as it houses in its depths (among other things) the only known passage to the all important Tenseigan Altar.

The Sanctum of Gaia: A strange and mysterious temple cultivated by Rusaku Otsutsuki; It’s purpose is currently unknown. It is a large swirling tree that resembles a God Tree at first glance. It is located directly under the artificial sun, stretching high into the sky so that it’s flowers may feed upon that light. It’s been rumored that an unknown centipede-like creature has begun to frequent this location after it’s conception.

Library of Kwalish: This is a building located on one of the many unexplored continents here on the Moon. It’s interior has not been documented yet, but reports have implied that there appears to be a living creature within that wanders its halls reading various books on the shelves lining the walls.

Tokugawa: The first expansive metropolis that was discovered when exploring this landscape, Tokugawa was clearly a community dedicated to the culture of the Otsutsuki. Many of the strange floating monoliths are here, but it is unknown if the city came first or the monolith as there are expansive temples built up to encompass the strange floating structures. Besides this it contains all of the hallmarks of a city; Businesses, residential areas, infrastructure. It is believed that the city hides a sprawling underground catacombs that contain many undiscovered secrets.
